Golf instructors tell students to hit the ball in the sweet
spot, and that's sensible advice. For golfers of every standard,
Phuket is probably the sweetest spot of all for hitting
a golf ball.
While other destinations in Thailand are also home to good
courses, only in Phuket is it possible to enjoy first-rate
golf, plus sun-drenched beaches and coral-reef diving, all
close to fine cuisine and a varied nightlife.
Many people visit Phuket to enjoy its water and sand. Golfers
will find plenty of both on the island's courses, mixing
a little pain with their pleasure. Yet win or lose, Phuket
is probably Thailand's best destination for wonderful warm-weather
golf. The number of courses on the island is growing and
they are well-maintained and constantly being upgraded.
Facilities are excellent. But the people matter even more.
Caddies, all of them women, are obligatory on the island's
courses. They add a sense of fun -- sanuk, as the Thais
call it -- to every round. Line up a birdie and your caddy
will smile along with you. Miss a putt and she will also
mourn the missed opportunity. Expert on each course and
knowledgeable about the game, the hundreds of caddies add
their special sanuk to the complete island golfing experience.
Golf is good everywhere. On Phuket, it's seldom less than
superb.
Two magnificent courses make up the Blue Canyon complex,
the Canyon course and the Lakes course. At Blue Canyon,
it's not only the course which leaves an impression.
The clubhouse offers Thai, Japanese and International
cuisine.
Surrounded by first-class resort hotels and exclusive
homes, cosmetic surgery has changed Laguna's character
from a parklands romp to a real test for all golfers.
Centrally-placed for all five-star activities.
Phuket's first 21st Century championship course lies
on the scenic north-east coast. A nine-hole night
golf course, due to open in early 2005, is also close
by in the foothills.
Preferred by many locals, the Country Club combines
a pleasurable 18-hole course with the toughest nine
holes on the island (Par 38). Club facilities include
a popular practice range and a huge swimming pool.
A short drive north of the island, Thai Muang offers
seaside golf at its best, a bit like a Scottish links
course with palm trees. A wonderful alternative for
those who hate hills but don't mind large bunkers
and rolling mounds amid rural surroundings.
The most informal of the clubs
on a course that calls for strategic shot-making across
lagoons and hillsides. No place for those who fear
water. The stocky palms that give the course its name
have the amazing ability to swallow golf balls at
every opportunity.
ISLAND GOLF TIPS: It's always warm
in Phuket. Play early or late. Book your starting
time to avoid delays. Between April and October, don't
forget your umbrella. Carts are available on most
but not all courses.
