Thai Muang Golf Club Phang Nga
Phuket Golf Courses
Comparisons with Phuket courses are not possible because Thai Muang is so different. The course tops 7000 yards off the back tees but its distinquishing features are more subtle than pure length.
The Course
The placement of tall mounds and long bunkers that rival the nearby stretch of beach can cause concern. So can the stiff sea breezes and serious rough. The greens are sometimes small and hard to hit, and the turf on putting surfaces and fairways requires a different approach. Many of the mounds have their own bunkers. The course has a small membership and about 100 caddies.
Top Holes
Hole 17
This 178-yard par three requires a shot across a lagoon and a long bunker to an equally long green. Known as 'The Lady", the hole is close to the beach and its bracing winds. From the putting surface, the view is spectacular, with large lagoons running in all directions.
Hole 18
A great finish for a seaside course, this 463-yard par four runs parallel to the ocean, so the breeze blows directly across it. Waves can sometimes be seen breaking on the beach. Mounds set the fairway rolling and there is plenty of rough to be negotiated before reaching the relative safety of the green. With good reason, it's called "The Gem."
Facilities
The clubhouse, built of stone and timber in sympathy with the surroundings, has locker rooms that rival Phuket's best and a pro shop. There are dining facilities, a driving range and putting green, and coaching is available. The long, unspoiled beach is a stone's throw away and the course is set in relaxed rural surroundings.
Accommodation
A chalet-style resort with swimming pool is nearby, close to the course and the beach. Other accommodation is also available. This coastal region of Phang Nga is developing steadily.
Transportation
Airport transfers for guests.
Location
The Thai Muang course is about 30 minutes off the island, a short drive north into Phang Nga province. It's a rolling seaside romp that offers links-style challenges of the kind that cannot be found on Phuket.
